This weekend’s ATP Challenger Tour finals featured close contests, with all four championship matches going to deciding sets. Eighteen-year-old Nicolai Budkov Kjaer won the Tampere Open, making him the youngest Norwegian to win multiple Challenger titles. He surpassed Christian Ruud in this achievement. Casper Ruud, currently ranked World No. 13, had previously won a single Challenger title at age 17 before moving up to the ATP Tour.
Budkov Kjaer defeated Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg of France 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-2 in the Tampere final. Reflecting on his victory, Budkov Kjaer said: “It was a good final, so I’m really happy to win. The match was tough and nerve-racking. It’s always difficult to play tie-breaks when you think about the consequences and not the possibilities. Luckily I managed to win one of the first two tie-breaks. We played a good match, and it was great to play in front of the crowd and win it.”
Budkov Kjaer is currently sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah standings, putting him in a strong position for qualification for the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF for players aged 20 and under. He commented on his progress: “I’m still young, and I still have so much to improve on,” said the 2024 Wimbledon boys’ singles champion. “The win was important and a step in the right direction.”
Mark Lajal captured his second Challenger title at Bloomfield Hills after saving five match points against American Andres Martin in a three-set final that ended 6-7(7), 7-5, 7-6(9). Lajal dedicated his victory to his late grandfather, saying: “This week means a lot, let’s keep on working and climbing,” Lajal wrote on Instagram. “Huge thank you to everyone who supported me this week, to my team, to my family, and to my sponsors. Unfortunately my grandpa left us a week ago, so this one was for you Paps. The work doesn’t stop baby.”
Elsewhere on tour, Lukas Klein secured back-to-back titles by winning at Zug after also taking home last week’s San Marino Challenger trophy. Klein beat Harold Mayot of France in three sets and is now riding a ten-match winning streak that has moved him up ten spots in the rankings.
George Loffhagen from Britain claimed his first Challenger title after defeating Nicolas Alvarez Varona over nearly three hours at Open Castilla y Leon Villa de el Espinar.
