Marin Cilic, the Croatian tennis player, is set to make his return to Wimbledon after a four-year absence. Cilic underwent two knee surgeries that kept him away from the sport. The second surgery in May 2024 was particularly crucial for his comeback.

Cilic expressed uncertainty about returning to top-level tennis following his surgeries. He recounted the difficulties he faced in finding a solution for his knee issues. “With the diagnosis of the knee and the possible solutions, I saw dozens of doctors, got lots of opinions left and right,” he said.

The second surgery proved successful, allowing Cilic to capture his 21st tour-level title in Hangzhou last September. “It has been really good since May 2024,” Cilic stated. He acknowledged some minor issues during the 2024 season but noted significant improvement since then.

Now 36 years old, Cilic returned to Wimbledon with renewed vigor after winning an ATP Challenger Tour event in Nottingham. Reflecting on his time away from Wimbledon, he shared: “I watched from the TV when I could in the years I did not play.”

Cilic’s upcoming challenge at Wimbledon is against Jack Draper, World No. 4 and British No. 1, marking their first encounter on court. Cilic praised Draper’s development: “I’ve been watching his game a lot and he’s improved incredibly.”

Recalling past experiences at Wimbledon, including matches against Andy Murray, Cilic compared Draper and Murray’s playing styles: “Jack plays high-risk, high-intensity tennis… Mentally, Jack is also quite hungry to win.”

Despite losing his ranking due to injury at the start of 2024, Cilic remained motivated by maintaining a high level of play throughout previous seasons. “Honestly… I had a great 2022 season,” he explained.

As he prepares for Thursday’s match on No. 1 Court against Draper and facing a British crowd, Cilic remains optimistic: “It will be great fun for me… it feels a reward and opportunity to play on the big stage against an incredible player.”
