Colton Smith and NCAA men’s singles champion Michael Zheng are among 22 college players who have secured direct entry into ATP Challenger Tour events. This opportunity is part of the third year of the ATP Next Gen Accelerator initiative.

The program, a collaboration between ATP and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), aims to enhance the development pathway for top American collegiate players. Following the NCAA Championships in May, qualification was based on year-end rankings and performances during the championships.

Among the qualifiers, Jack Pinnington Jones, Zheng, Oliver Tarvet, and Smith have been multiple-time qualifiers for this accelerator program. Smith made his ATP Tour debut at Indian Wells earlier this year, where he qualified and defeated Flavio Cobolli in the main draw before advancing to his first ATP Tour quarter-final in Houston.

Rafael Jodar from the University of Virginia won the 2024 US Open boys’ singles title as a freshman. Samir Banerjee, a junior at Stanford University and 2021 Wimbledon boys’ singles champion, is also noted among promising talents.

Pinnington Jones from Texas Christian University has previously defeated Cameron Norrie at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Nottingham last year.

Players ranked in the Top 20 of ITA final singles rankings who have completed their education receive up to eight Accelerator Spots at Challenger 50 and 75 tournaments. Opportunities are divided between main draw spots for Top 10 ITA-ranked players and qualifying spots for those ranked 11-20.

Additionally, players reaching at least the quarter-finals of individual NCAA Division I Championships qualify for the ATP Next Gen Accelerator if not already eligible through their ITA ranking. These opportunities commence on July 7, 2025, lasting for one year.

For those continuing their education, six opportunities will be available over six months (July–December), allowing them to benefit from this program during their college offseason and parts of their fall season.
