This victory secured his place in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament. The Spaniard has a notable record against Top 50 players this year, standing at 15-8, and he reached at least the quarter-finals in his two most recent ATP 500 events in Acapulco and Barcelona.
Davidovich Fokina’s win against Monfils marks his second victory over the Frenchman, improving their Lexus ATP Head2Head series to 2-0. He will face Flavio Cobolli next after Cobolli’s win over Vitaliy Sachko. Cobolli recently claimed his first tour-level title on clay in Bucharest.
Frances Tiafoe also advanced to the next round with a win over Buyunchaokete, improving his opening-round match record to 10-2 for the year. Tiafoe will compete against Camilo Ugo Carabelli following Carabelli’s victory over Sebastian Baez.
In other matches, Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Francisco Comesana, while Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard overcame Alexander Bublik with ten aces during their match. Perricard is set to play Felix Auger-Aliassime next after Auger-Aliassime’s win against Daniel Altmaier.
