Taylor Fritz has reached the third round at Wimbledon after a challenging few days. The American, seeded fifth, secured his place by defeating Canadian Gabriel Diallo in a match that lasted over three hours. This victory came after Fritz’s intense schedule of consecutive five-set matches, totaling 109 games—the third-highest number for a male player at Wimbledon since 2022.
“That’s an incredibly hard match. In the four sets I’ve lost, I really don’t think there’s much I did wrong at all,” Fritz stated regarding his performance against Diallo. He emphasized the need to play nearly flawlessly when opportunities arose and expressed satisfaction with advancing.
Fritz’s journey included overcoming significant challenges from powerful servers in his initial matches. In the first round, he faced Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who delivered the fastest serve recorded in tournament history. Their match was paused due to curfew rules and resumed the following day, with Fritz eventually winning in five sets.
“Tomorrow’s going to be a very light hit,” Fritz remarked about his plans following these demanding matches. He noted having played numerous matches consecutively and looked forward to a day of rest.
During his match against Diallo, Fritz sustained an injury while diving for a forehand but continued playing after receiving medical attention. He managed to secure victory and improve his record against Diallo.
Throughout his first two matches, Fritz faced 63 aces—37 from Mpetshi Perricard and 26 from Diallo—while hitting 56 aces himself. As the No. 5 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Fritz is set to face either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Botic van de Zandschulp next.
Davidovich Fokina was leading van de Zandschulp when their match was suspended due to darkness, leaving unresolved tension as they await its conclusion.
