Gabriel Diallo secured his first ATP Tour title at the Libema Open, showcasing impressive performance on grass courts. The 23-year-old Canadian defeated Zizou Bergs in the final with a score of 7-5, 7-6(8). This victory has propelled him to a career-high ranking of No. 44 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
Reflecting on his achievement, Diallo shared with ATPTour.com, “It’s tough to put into words. It’s a really special feeling. I’ve played really well this week, some of the best tennis I’ve played on grass.” He expressed satisfaction in winning his second final after losing his first and emphasized the significance of lifelong dedication to reaching such milestones.
Diallo’s ascent into the Top 50 was another highlight for him. “It means a lot,” he said. Despite achieving this goal earlier than anticipated, he remains focused on further accomplishments this year.
Since turning professional, Diallo has learned valuable lessons about handling pressure and expectations. He noted that it is crucial to evaluate oneself honestly after matches and not dwell on losses.
Key moments in Diallo’s career have contributed to his current success. These include winning U18 nationals in Canada and making NCAA finals during college. Each milestone has prepared him for future challenges.
Diallo attributes much of his success to his parents’ sacrifices, acknowledging their role in supporting his journey by moving to Montreal and working hard for his opportunities.
Describing himself as an aggressive player who also incorporates feel and touch into rallies, Diallo maintains a laid-back attitude off the court, enjoying movies, sports like football and basketball, and spending time with friends and family.
To celebrate his victory at the Libema Open, Diallo plans a modest celebration with his team before heading to Queen’s Club for upcoming matches.
