Bulgaria’s Ivan Ivanov has advanced to the Junior Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, marking the country’s first appearance in such a final since 2008. Ivanov secured his place by defeating Germany’s Max Schoenhaus with scores of 7-6(7) 7-6(5). This victory allowed him to avenge his previous loss to Schoenhaus at the Roland Garros Junior Championships.
Ivanov is now the sixth Bulgarian player to reach a Junior Grand Slam final, following Grigor Dimitrov, who won both the US Open and Wimbledon boys’ titles in 2008. Despite hopes for an all-Bulgarian final, Ronit Karki from the United States defeated Bulgaria’s Alexander Vasilev with scores of 5-7 6-4 6-1.
Reflecting on his win, Ivanov expressed excitement about reaching the final but admitted he forgot part of his planned celebration dance. “I did not do the celebration I planned properly,” he said. He added that he is pleased with his performance and grateful for reaching this stage.
Karki, born in New Jersey, is making history as well by becoming the first American to reach the boys’ final at Wimbledon since Michael Zheng in 2022. He also became the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam boys’ singles final since Noah Rubin in 2014. Karki expressed gratitude for having gone through qualifying rounds: “Even though I had to come through qualifying to get here, I wouldn’t want to change anything.”
This weekend could be significant for American junior tennis as Julieta Pareja also competes in the girls’ final alongside Karki.
