There are several compelling narratives emerging from Wimbledon qualifying rounds, including that of Shintaro Mochizuki from Japan, a former junior world No. 1. The 22-year-old secured his place in the main draw by defeating Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker in the third and final round of qualifying at Roehampton. Mochizuki now has the opportunity to achieve his first main draw match-win at a Grand Slam.

Achieving this milestone at Wimbledon would be significant for Mochizuki, who won the Wimbledon boys’ title in 2019, becoming the first Japanese player to win a Junior Grand Slam. That same year, he played a crucial role in helping Japan secure the Davis Cup Juniors title by defeating hosts USA in Orlando.

Another notable player making headlines is Iva Jovic from the United States. A former world champion at the 16-and-under level, Jovic will make her debut in Wimbledon’s main draw after advancing through qualifying rounds. At just 17 years old, she was part of the USA team that won the Billie Jean King Cup Juniors title in 2022 and has since climbed to No. 89 in the WTA Rankings. This year alone, she claimed victory at W100 Charlottesville on the ITF World Tennis Tour and earned her first WTA title at Ilkley earlier this month.

Unlike Mochizuki, Jovic has already achieved a main draw match-win at a Grand Slam, reaching the second round of both the 2024 US Open and this season’s Australian Open and Roland Garros.

Linda Fruhvirtova from Czechia also successfully navigated through qualifying to seek her maiden main draw match-win at Wimbledon. Her decisive victory came against Japan’s Eni Shibahara. Ranked as World No. 150, Fruhvirtova is a former junior world No. 2 who won the 2019 ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Finals alongside her sister Brenda and Nikola Bartunkova.

In 2023, Fruhvirtova reached the fourth round of the Australian Open but has yet to win another main draw match at a Grand Slam since then. The 20-year-old aims to change that record during her appearance at SW19.
