French tennis player Corentin Moutet achieved a significant victory at the Mubadala Citi DC Open by defeating Daniil Medvedev. The match, which took place on Friday, was marked by a mid-match suspension due to lightning and concluded with Moutet capitalizing on Medvedev’s double faults in his final service game.

The contest lasted two hours and 15 minutes before being paused due to local lightning. At that point, Moutet was leading 1-6, 6-4, 5-4. After an hour-long delay, Moutet returned to break Medvedev’s serve immediately and secured a win with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 after two hours and 25 minutes of play. “The World No. 14 unraveled under pressure,” noted observers as Medvedev committed three double faults in the resumed game.

Moutet clinched his fourth Top 20 win on a hard court on his third match point. He executed an impressive sequence of plays including a return block and scrambling to the net for a drop shot from Medvedev. The final rally saw Medvedev pushing the ball wide after Moutet showcased exceptional hand skills at the net.

Medvedev had initially dominated with ten winners in the opening set but faltered as Moutet rallied in the second set. The French player then leveraged errors from Medvedev upon resumption to secure victory. Following this triumph, Moutet has risen 13 spots to No. 46 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is expected to reach a career-high ranking soon.

Both players faced challenges due to hot conditions during the match. Medvedev required a medical timeout for heat stress during the second set at a critical moment when he was trailing.

This defeat ended Medvedev’s quest for his first title since Rome in 2023 and halted his attempt to reach his 60th tour-level semi-final. For Moutet, this marks his first appearance in an ATP Tour semi-final above the ATP 250 level, where he will face either Alex de Minaur or Brandon Nakashima next.
