Lorenzo Musetti achieved a significant milestone in his Grand Slam career by securing his first Top 10 victory at Roland Garros. The Italian player defeated 10th seed Holger Rune with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, advancing to his second major quarter-final.
In this match between Top 10 players in the PIF ATP Rankings, World No. 7 Musetti excelled in the final two sets to claim his first Lexus ATP Head2Head win against Rune after three attempts. On Court Philippe-Chatrier, Musetti maintained control during rallies while Rune’s aggressive strategy, involving frequent net charges, was not enough to stop Musetti from winning in three hours and 18 minutes.
Musetti aims to replicate his previous year’s Wimbledon semi-final performance as he prepares to face Frances Tiafoe next. Tiafoe has yet to lose a set in the tournament.
The opening set concluded dramatically with both players exchanging breaks at 5-4 before Musetti secured the set on his second opportunity. Although Rune managed to level the match in the second set, he struggled against Musetti’s consistent rally play as the match progressed.
Musetti becomes the tenth Italian man to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals in the Open Era and could potentially face fellow Italian and World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final.
Frances Tiafoe also advanced to his first Roland Garros quarter-final following a straight-set victory over unseeded German Daniel Altmaier with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4). This achievement matches Tiafoe’s total wins from nine prior main-draw appearances at this clay-court major.
Tiafoe is notable for being the first American since Andre Agassi in 1995 to reach this stage without dropping a set. Alongside Tommy Paul, he marks a significant moment for U.S. tennis as it is the first time since 1996 that two American men have reached this stage at Roland Garros.
Tiafoe’s win serves as redemption for Taylor Fritz after Altmaier eliminated him earlier in the tournament. Tiafoe won an impressive 30 out of 37 net points during this match according to Infosys Stats.
