Emilio Nava secured a commanding win in the opening round of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo in Los Cabos. The 23-year-old American triumphed over Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3, marking his first hard-court victory since February at the same event. This win elevates Nava to a career-high No. 118 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. He will face either sixth seed Buyunchaokete or qualifier Alan Magadan next.
“I guess they say ‘Smile through the pain’,” Nava commented during his on-court interview. “It was super humid, super hot, my shirt was drenched, but I was just having fun out there, just getting after it. I love coming to Mexico to play, especially in Los Cabos. I’m happy to be back, and hopefully I can go for more.”
Another American player, Aleksandar Kovacevic, also advanced to the second round of this ATP 250 event. The 26-year-old ended a seven-match losing streak by defeating Hady Habib with scores of 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Kovacevic has previously reached quarter-finals consecutively in Los Cabos from 2023 to 2024 and now holds a record of 5-2 at this venue according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
Mexican wild card Alex Hernandez achieved a notable comeback victory against Taro Daniel with scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 early Tuesday morning. Trailing initially at 3-6 and then at 2-5 in the second set, Hernandez turned the match around for his biggest career win yet. He will next compete against top seed Andrey Rublev.
Juan Pablo Ficovich earned his second career win on the ATP Tour by defeating Alibek Kachmazov with scores of 6-3, 6-2 in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting. Ficovich is set to meet fourth seed Quentin Halys in the second round.
