It is not even halfway through the tournament, and this year’s Roland Garros is already trending towards a historic milestone. There have been eight comebacks from two-sets-to-love down, just two shy of the event’s Open Era record, set in 1976 and matched in 1992.
A significant day in Paris featured two such comebacks. Portuguese qualifier Henrique Rocha upset #NextGenATP Jakub Mensik with scores of 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Alexander Bublik rallied past ninth seed Alex de Minaur with scores of 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
“I’m sure this is one of the best that I had at the Slams, and maybe overall on the Tour,” said Bublik after earning his first win against the Australian in their fourth Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting.
In 1992, there were a record nine two-set-to-love comebacks in just the opening two rounds at Roland Garros. This year’s edition has matched 1976 for the second most in as many rounds.
The record for a major tournament stands at 14 during the 2002 Australian Open, followed by ten as the second-highest mark.
