Thierry Ntwali, the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) Development Officer for East and Central Africa, has been recognized with the Tennis Black List’s International Trailblazer award. This accolade is awarded to individuals whose leadership has significantly impacted tennis on an international level.

Ntwali received this honor at The Queen’s Club in London, joining other notable winners such as Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, and Angella Okutoyi. The Tennis Black List event celebrates black and mixed-black excellence in tennis and was founded by sports broadcaster Anne-Marie Batson and Richard Sackey-Addo of the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

“It is an honor to receive the International Trailblazer award from the Tennis Black List,” Ntwali expressed. “I am proud, humbled, and filled with gratitude.”

He acknowledged his dedication to developing tennis in East and Central Africa over more than a decade as meaningful recognition for himself and the region. He emphasized the importance of shining a light on efforts to grow tennis in emerging communities.

Sackey-Addo highlighted Ntwali’s contributions: “It is no coincidence that over the last few years we are seeing a new, history-making generation of players from the region finding success at ITF Junior/College/Professional level.”

Ntwali has served as ITF Development Officer since 2011, during which time East and Central Africa have made significant strides. The region now hosts numerous ITF World Tennis Tour events each year. Additionally, grassroots initiatives like the ITF Junior Tennis Initiative engage around 7,000 children.

Rising stars Sada Nahimana and Okutoyi exemplify what structured development can achieve. Their achievements inspire future generations while placing East and Central Africa on the global tennis map.

“Contributing to the growth of tennis in East and Central Africa has been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life,” Ntwali added.

The event also highlighted Dante Talent as a partner organization supporting athlete development.
